Challah¶
Based on a recipe from Chabad.
Ingredients¶
- Sugar (1 tsp + 1/4 cup)
- Yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
- Oil (1/2 cup)
- Salt (2 tsp)
- Flour (4 cups)
- Seasame seeds
- Eggs (3)
Preparation¶
- Rinse large mixing bowl in hot water.
- Warm 1/2 cup of water.
- Put in bowl.
- Dissolve 1 tsp of sugar in bowl.
- Sprinkle yeast on top.
- Wait 10 minutes.
- Stir.
- Warm 1/2 cup of water.
- Add oil, warm water, 1/4 cup of sugar, salt, 2 eggs, 2 cups of flour.
- Beat well.
- Stir in rest of flour. Dough should be sticky.
- Cover dough with damp kitchen towel.
- Wait 10 minutes.
- Turn out onto a floured board.
- Knead for 10 minutes.
- Grease a bowl with oil.
- Cover with damp kitchen towel.
- Wait 2 hours.
- Punch down.
- Cover again.
- Wait 45 minutes.
- Cover with a damp cloth.
- Divide dough into 3 equal parts.
- Shape into strands.
- Lightly grease baking sheet.
- Put strands on baking sheet.
- Braid loosely.
- Fasten ends.
- Cover with damp cloth.
- Wait an hour.
- Beat egg yolk.
- Brush.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds.
- Preheat oven to 400F.
- Bake for 30 minutes.
